New Wear Crossing

An urban motorway will be carried across the river on a cable-stayed structure of 330 metres span. The original design team led by Techniker with Roughan and O’Donovan worked to the limit of contemporary analysis packages, wind engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Every ounce of steel and concrete was exploited in the structure using the provisions of the new Eurocode. The competition winning design for the New Wear Crossing went through a number of iterations before and after the tendered scheme was shelved.
