Rochester Riverside Footbridges

A pair of footbridges on the east bank of the river Medway. Loose agglomerations of timber planking are supported on closely-spaced tubular steel piles. Vertical supports are extended above deck level by carbon fibre wands, incorporating feature lights, tuned to sway in light airs but to remain serviceable in extreme winds. The composition of each bridge integrates with the surrounding landscaping of marsh and mud-flat. The bridges rely for their support and lateral stability on the central groupings of struts and touch the river-walls only lightly. The foundation rods are driven through to firm rock and can be readily extracted to make the bridge’s construction fully reversible.
