The Novium

A new museum, sited over the remains of the Roman thermal baths, comprises a series of display galleries set above a large hall cantilevering over the original archaeology. The foundations design has been driven by the need to minimise impact on the sensitive archeology below, whilst an in-situ RC frame deals with the complicated geometry needed to maximise natural daylight and ventilation. A bespoke concrete mix was developed for the exposed structure with a light-coloured, glittering finish made by carbonate blasting a bespoke concrete mix, rich in mica.
